Marfa Dialogues

André Gregory

André Gregory

30 March – 4 April 2005

The Chinati Foundation, Lannan Foundation, and Ballroom Marfa are pleased to present a week-long program celebrating the work of acclaimed theater director André Gregory, featuring open rehearsal performances of Endgame by Samuel Beckett and other special events and film screenings.

Acclaimed theater director André Gregory will be in residence in Marfa, Texas and will perform with a small group of actors, artists, and designers, Samuel Beckett’s Endgame in an open rehearsal format, as well as presenting readings, talks, and screenings of his influential films My Dinner with Andre and Vanya on 42nd Street. Beginning on March 30, and running through April 4, this series of events will celebrate and examine in depth the work of one of America’s most influential and innovative stage directors.

Also participating in the program are long-time collaborators including noted theater designer Eugene Lee, actors Gerry Bamman, Larry Pine, sound artist Bruce Odlen, and filmmaker Cindy Kleine. The week long program will feature open rehearsals of Samuel Beckett’s Endgame, a new production directed by Gregory, as well as a one-man performance entitled, After Dinner with Andre, focusing on his distinguished 40 year career in the theatre.

Endgame by Samuel Beckett debuted in 1957 and is considered one of the author’s finest dramatic works and a masterpiece of modern theater. Since his controversial and critically acclaimed 1973 production, Andre Gregory has returned to the text every decade. As in the earlier production, actors Gerry Bammam and Larry Pine will again be featured. Gregory has said that when he began working on the text in the 1970’s it was a response to the Vietnam War. “Now it’s a response to a post 9/11 America and Bush Fascism. I am very intrigued about the ways in which fear is affecting our lives.”

Andre Gregory’s Marfa residency and performance program will be the first collaborative project sponsored by the Chinati Foundation, Lannan Foundation, and Ballroom Marfa, three of the leading non-profit organizations in this far west Texas community that is attracting international attention for its majestic landscape, world class art and a growing number of artists, writers, architects, and designers.
