Marfa Dialogues

DJ Camp 2010

19 July 2010–23 July 2010

Listen to the radio interview with DJ Bigface, Thursday, July 23, 2011 at 10:30 am. Javier will be a guest during the live weekly interview program Talk at Ten on KRTS 93.5 FM or streaming live at marfapublicradio.org.

DJing hits the streets of Marfa this week, with area students learning the basics of mixing and scratching at Ballroom Marfa’s 2010 DJ Summer Camp. Ballroom Marfa is working with Javier “DJ Bigface” Arredondo to organize and lead the classes. With over two decades of experience, DJ Bigface is also one of the creative forces behind DJ Dojo in Austin, where he’s taught for over four years.

This five-day program is a hands-on experience, with students learning directly on DJ equipment. Students experiment with mixing songs and sampling music, while DJ Bigface highlights other creative aspects of DJ culture, such as dance and art.

During the week, participants will also create DJ personas and design posters for display at the final event, a special performance by the student DJs on July 23, 2010 from 5–7 p.m. at the Capri event space (across the street from the Thunderbird Hotel). The performance is free and open to the community—and possibly your last chance to see these kids before they explode on the DJ scene.
