Here at Ballroom we’re busy preparing for next weekend’s Valentine’s Dance with Texas country music legend Gary P. Nunn, spreading the word about this special night of Valentine’s romance.

But that’s not the only thing happening this week in the Trans-Pecos to commemorate the Feast of Saint Valentine …

If you’re eager to get an early start on the festivities, Marfa Public Radio is hosting a Sweethearts Ball and silent auction at the Hotel Paisano this Saturday, 9 February 2013. Tickets are $35 in advance, $50 at the door, with proceeds going to benefit public radio in West Texas.

On the big day itself, Big Bend Brewing Company is hosting a beer-tasting from 4-8pm in Valentine, TX at the “Old Mercantile Building in the middle of town,” featuring performances from The Doodlin’ Hogwallops and Andy Schneider. If you catch the Hogwallops performing their hit single “Valentine Texas” in Valentine, Texas on Valentine’s Day you’re guaranteed some kind of good luck in love in 2013, right?

And then of course we’ll be capping off this most romantic of weeks with Gary at Ballroom Marfa on Friday, 15 February 2013. Doors open at 7pm, show at 8pm. Tickets are $10 at the door.

A Vidas Perfectas performance, plus Tinariwen

20 Mar 2012

New Yorkers: Vidas Perfectas, the new Spanish-language production of Robert Ashley’s Perfect Lives, returns to New York this Sunday, March 25, at Le Poisson Rouge. This one-night-only performance features the first and final episodes of the opera, El Parque (The Park) and El Patio De Atras (The Backyard), in partial staging. For all who missed the December 2011 premiere, this is your chance. Buy tickets now.

In other music news, I stumbled upon this video of Tinariwen playing “Tenere Taqqim Tossam,” their collaboration with TV on the Radio’s Kyp Malone and Tunde Adebimpe. When Tinariwen played here in November, I had this secret fantasy that Kyp and Tunde would join them onstage. That did not happen. But this is a nice taste of what could have been.

This weekend, don’t miss our third annual silent film/new year’s extravaganza, which goes down this Friday, 30 December (we’re starting the holiday celebrating early this year)

We’ll be screening Charlie Chaplin’s The Kid (1921), followed by Maya Deren and Alexander Hammid’s short experimental film, Meshes of the Afternoon (1943), with a live soundtrack by Shahzad Ismaily

We’re super excited for both films (you can watch the Chaplin trailer here: trust us: tears will roll), and doubly thrilled to have composer and performer Ismaily here from New York (he wrote the score for Frozen River, which won the grand jury prize at Sundance in 2008)

So if you’re in Marfa on Friday, let’s just say: your plans are set

(Also: we’ll also have a little New Year’s Eve gathering at the gallery on Saturday from 4 to 5 pm, with snacks and portraits drawn by locals

True story! Stop by to share the merriment!)

We present “The Kid” and “Meshes of the Afternoon,” with a live score by Shahzad Ismaily, on 30 December 2011 at the Crowley Theater

Doors at 7 pm; show begins at 7:30 pm

Entry is free, and seating is general admission

Great new “Atom Fables” photos by Liz Ligon

25 Nov 2011

Just got photos from Atom Fables, the collaborative work by artist Laleh Khorramian and musician Shahzad Ismaily that we presented with Friends of the High Line in October

Atom Fables featured Khorramian’s films, which were rearranged in real-time to a musical composition performed live by Ismaily

These photos are by Liz Ligon, courtesy of Friends of the High Line, and they’re making me nostalgic for the event

See more here (I love how beautiful the High Line looks in the background of some shots, and I love that pink-walled one)

We’re excited to announce The Reading, a staged screenplay presentation of a winning script from the prestigious 2010 Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting. The chosen script, The Jumper of Maine, was written by Austin-based screenwriter Andrew Lanham, and revolves around a paramedic with Tourette’s Syndrome forced to come to terms with his life and condition when he falls in love.

The script will be performed at 3 pm and 8 pm on 26 March 2011, featuring both Marfa and Dallas talent (including Angie Bolling, who appeared in Friday Night Lights, Walker Texas Ranger, RoboCop 3, Dallas, and A Woman of Independent Means, as well as Drew Wall, who received the Outstanding Performance as an Actor Award by the DFW Critics Forum in 2009 and won the Best Male Supporting Performance from D Magazine/Best in Theater in 2010). The performance is directed by the Dallas-based actor and director John S. Davies, who has acted in more than 60 professional theater productions, as well as directed recent productions such as Richard III for Shakespeare Dallas and T Bone N Weasel for Circle Theatre in Fort Worth. Each performance will be followed by a panel discussion with Lahham and Davies, moderated by producer and entertainment executive Robert Shapiro.
